Observability glossary and disambiguation
Working definitions that separate monitoring, observability platforms, AIOps, and applied observability without turning labels into capability claims.
Read the page as a transparent path: establish context, inspect the evidence, then test the published stance.
Terms in observability material are contextual, not interchangeable. OpenTelemetry describes observability in terms of understanding a system from emitted telemetry, while monitoring commonly emphasizes predefined conditions and known failure modes [1]. Observaloka applies the following editorial distinctions.
Working definitions
| Term | Observaloka usage | Do not infer |
|---|---|---|
| Monitoring | Collection and evaluation of signals against known questions, states, or thresholds. | That monitoring is obsolete, narrow, or non-observable. |
| Observability | The ability and practice of investigating system state through available evidence, including questions not fully predefined. | Automatic root cause, complete coverage, or a specific tool category. |
| Observability platform | A product or composed system whose evidenced primary scope spans telemetry handling and investigative workflows. | Equal depth across logs, metrics, traces, profiles, events, or business context. |
| OSP | An ambiguous abbreviation. A page must expand it and state whether it means observability platform, observability service provider, or a source-specific term. | A globally accepted category. |
| AIOps | Use of statistical or machine-learning techniques in IT or operational workflows, with the specific input, output, autonomy, and evaluation stated. | Reliable causality, remediation, or intelligence merely because a feature uses AI language. |
| Applied observability | Use of observability-derived evidence in a defined business, security, product, cost, or operational decision workflow. | That adjacent BI, accounting, or workflow software is itself technical observability. |
Editorial rule
Expand overloaded terms on first use, link to this page where ambiguity affects interpretation, and classify capabilities from cited behavior rather than marketing labels. If a source uses a different definition, preserve that definition as an attributed source claim and explain the difference.
